Name: Ingenia yanshini
Geologic Age: Late Jurassic
Location: Nemegt Formation, Mongolia
Comments: Representing a mass-mortality event, these remains of five dinosaurs include three fairly complete skeletons and parts of two other individuals. Three complete, well-preserved skulls, and one partial skull, are seen. Ingenia was a 5-6.5 foot-long, 50-pound oviraptorid dinosaur that lived in Southern Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous Period, 80 million years ago. It belonged to the suborder Theropoda, and may have competed with its close relative, Oviraptor, for food and territory. Its diet is uncertain, though it was probably an omnivore, eating insects, eggs, shelled animals, small animals, roots and seeds, dead carcasses, and vegetation. It laid a total of 24 eggs per clutch and may have nurtured its eggs as Oviraptor did. Its name, given in 1981, originates from the name of its discovery site, the Ingeni-Khobur Depression in Mongolia. Fitted with a steel armature, this fascinating and desirable piece is suitable for wall hanging. The overall size of the matrix measures 63 inches x 31 inches. These specimens represent some of the most complete skeletal remains ever found of this rare therapod!
