This is the stomach contents from an American Mastodon.  This was found in the 1990's during the excavation of a pond on a golf course.  When they were at the proposed edge of the pond, the backhoe operator drug his bucket across the rib cage of an ancient skeleton.  A local paleontologist was brought in and it was confirmed that what they had found was a Mastodon.  When a couple of the ribs were removed the bolus was discovered.  The paleontologist was able to reach in and grab a handful of material out of the bolus and put it into a bag for study.  It was determined that this was most likely a fully intact Mastodon...  At this point the golf course decided that they did not want the "hassle" of having their greens dug up and destroyed to excavate a Mastodon so the area was filled back in and the project was moved in another direction.  With the exception of 2 other Riker Mounts of material, what is presented here is the total of what was recovered before it was lost.  The pieces of plant material have been cut into similar sized pieces by the Mastodon teeth.  Had it been Mammoth, the material would have been crushed and ground up.  Similar bolus material from Burning Springs Ohio has produced viable, living elephantoid intestinal flora!  This Riker Mount measures 5.25" x 6.25".
