When Mammoth tusks are found, they need to go through a long and properly monitored drying process so that the ivory can dry and stabilize, otherwise if they are prepared and sold as found they most likely WILL dry and split over time.... Once this drying period is complete (which can last up to a year) the tusks are then prepared. Preparation of tusks usually involves sanding the surface, filling any cracks that have occurred during the drying process and color matching those cracks to the surrounding area. Once that has been completed the tusks are sealed with a coating, buffed and then a custom-fit stand is made to match the tusk. VERY FEW tusks are found that do not have some crack repair and filling.. so beware of those advertised as perfect with no repairs or restoration.
