Name: Spathacalymene nasuta
Geologic Age: Silurian
Stratigraphic detail: Osgood Formation
Location: Ripley County, Indiana
Description: This is a very cool plate. There are lots of pyrite cube crystals and other Spathacalymene parts scattered throughout this plate.. AND.. there are TWO EXTREMELY RARE Spathacalymene trilobites present!! To add to the RARITY of this plate.. both specimens are Juveniles!! The "larger" bug is about 1.5cm, or just over half an inch, and has a nice 'spatula' coming off the nose. The smaller bug is 1.1cm and is pulling its head back and up a bit sucking the spatula under a bit. The free cheek on the larger specimen had started to drift a little bit as seen in photo #5. Virtually ALL Spathacalymene specimens found are found in a ventral position.. they are then prepped and flipped to a dorsal position. This rare trilobite is one of the strangest species of the Silurian. While Calymenes are fairly common, this off-shoot of Calymene developed this strange anterior process. The genus Spathacalymene is known only from the Silurian of Indiana and time equivalent strata of England.Spathacalymene Trilobite 1 - Price $1100.00
