Name:   Isotelus gigas
Geologic Age:    Middle Ordovician
Stratigraphic Detail:  Trenton Group
Location:   Trenton Falls, New York

Description:  This is a beautiful glossy, jet-black example of the trilobite Isotelus gigas, partially enrolled, from a classic U.S. locality.  This is a very inflated trilobite that has been prepared to look as though it has wrapped itself around the small spire of freestanding matrix.  Using a flexible measuring tape, this Isotelus measures 4.3cm (1.75 inches) from head to tail.  The eyes are not compressed, a rare feature on this species.  The trilobite has three compression areas where bryozoans once laid, causing large indentations in the shell.  Otherwise a beautiful trilobite!
