Captorhinus

The Captorhinus is one of the very first known reptiles to be found in the fossil records. The age is Permian which dates back over 280 million years old. The T-Rex Dinosaur only dates back 65 million years old. Reptiles have either anapsid or diapsid skulls. Anapsid skulls lack temporal openings in the back sides of the skull. Diapsid skulls have two temporal openings near the back of the head. An example of a Diapsid skull would be a crocodile. The captorhinus is an anapsid reptile. Turtles are the only anapsid reptiles alive today. If you look at the top of the head you will see a small hole. This hole allowed sun light to reach a small gland on the top of the brain. The Captorhinus was a plant eating reptile. This can be seen from the teeth. The back teeth are multi rowed and suited for crushing leaves rather than cutting meat.
