Name: Weevil Cocoon (Leptopius duponti)
Geologic Age: Holocene/Pleistocene
Location: Eyre Peninsula, Southern Australia
Comments: These insect cocoons were found in the Holocene deposits of Australia.. they are believed to be from the Weevil, Leptopius duponti. Analysis shows that these cocoons were made of sand or gravel with a secretion from the weevil larva. The
larva lived underground feeding on the roots or underground stems. When fully fed it prepared to pupate by making a chamber, or cocoon, where it underwent the change from larva to adult beetle. Instead of spinning a cocoon like other insects, the larva makes a cell in the earth by tamping the soil around it to form a hard wall, perhaps exuding a secretion which makes the soil or sand set like concrete. The larva entered the pupal stage which may have lasted for months. The new adult then pushed its way through the cell wall and burrowed to the surfaceAustralia Insect Cocoon $15.00 each (several available)

Name: Moqui (Moki) Marbles
Stratigraphic detail: Navajo Sandstone Formation
Location: Utah
Comments: Moqui Marbles are hematite concretions found in the Navajo Sandstone Formation of Utah. They are named after the Moqui Indians who inhabited the lands where the marbles are found. In Hopi, Moqui means "dearly departed ones". According to legend, Hopi ancestors descended from heaven with the marbles and played games. It is believed that the ancestors return to heaven at sunrise leaving the marbles behind as a sign they are happy. They have also been referred to as "Thunderballs" and "Shaman Stones". There are many theories as to how Moqui Marbles are formed. One theory is that they formed from meteorites hitting the earth, causing a rain of small particles that hit the sand. Another theory is they were formed when groundwater flowed through permeable rock triggering a chemical reaction that caused minerals to precipitate around a nucleus and formed a layered ball. Moqui Marbles are likened to the "Blueberries" recently found on Mars.Small Moqui Marbles < 1" in size- $5.00 Each (10 Available)
Large Moqui Marbles > 1"+ in size- $7.50 Each (50 Available)
