Name: Phanocrinus formosus
Geologic Age: MississippianStratigraphic detail: Big Clifty FormationLocation: Crawford County, IndianaComments: Here is a beautiful example of a pathological crinoid from southern Indiana. This crinoid, Phanocrinus formosus, exhibits a regenerating arm tip after it was probably eaten by a Mississippian crusher shark. The crinoid is a beautiful white calcite fossilized on a gray matrix. The crinoid shows five arms with pinnules and the tip of the left arm shows a textbook regeneration. This crinoid is not from the world famous Crawfordsville crinoid beds, but from a far more obscure location close to the Kentucky border. The crinoid measures 1 1/4" long and has 7/8" of stem associated with the crown. The matrix measures 3 1/4" x 2 1/2". This crinoid, Tholocrinus spinosus, exhibits numerous emanating spines to protect the crinoid from being eaten. Thirteen very distinct spines can be easily seen. The crinoid is a beautiful white calcite fossilized on a gray matrix. This crinoid is not from the world famous Crawfordsville crinoid beds, but from a far more obscure location close to the Kentucky border. The crinoid measures 1 3/8" long.
