Name: Spiny Shark
Geologic Age: Jurassic
Stratigraphic detail: Tombigbee River
Location: Gainesville, Alabama
Comments: This small cache of pyrite/marcasite coprolite was found in a small underwater cave/cut in the river.  This is from a prehistoric "Spiny Shark" that presumably inhabited these caves/cuts and left their droppings to become fossilized.  They have been replaced by pyrite/marcasite.   Some of these still contain oyster shell fragments indicating that these sharks fed on them.  The piling/mound twisting is caused by passage of the fecal material through a bone-like flap in the anus.  Very interesting specimen that measures approx.  1 9/16" long.
