Mimetaster is a Devonian marrellomorph known from the Lower Devonian Hunsrück Shale, and is the most "common" arthropod (trilobites excluded) from the locality, known from over 100 specimens including three juveniles. The animals probably lived in small groups.
While some of the specimens found in the slate appear to be "mushy".. they are not. These arthropods would crawl across the bottom of the Devonian Sea and using their long arms, they would gather debris and place it on their backs for camouflage to blend into the environment and hide from would-be predators!
