Name: Roman Empire - Iron Projectile Point - The Romans would use thin, iron projectile points on spears and javelins.  They would throw these at the enemy with the intention of having them stick in their protective shields.  This made the shields become very cumbersome with a heavy javelin hanging out the front of the shield.  When they couldn't dislodge them from their shields quickly they would be forced to abandon their shields which then made them much easier targets for the archers and foot soldiers...
