Eurypterids

Prevalent during the Silurain and Devonian ages, eurypterids were segmented aquatic arthropods, with compound eyes, and two club-like "arms." These extinct creatures are related to today's horseshoe crab, and the fossil trilobite. Like trilobites, eurypterids shed their chitin-covered exoskeleton as they grew. Some species exhibit toothed claws, and may therefore have been predators.

Comments:    This is an unusual specimen.. it is a BIGGER Eurypterid with great paddles and some of the front walking arms present.. but what makes it unusual is the way its telson is tucked up against the body.. very nice specimen and interesting conversation piece.

Stratigraphic detail:  Fiddlers Green
Location:  Herkimer County, New York
Comments:    This is a BEAUTIFUL display piece!  The main specimen and the back half of a 2nd specimen are nicely centered in this 8.5" x 14.75" block of matrix.  There are remnants of other specimens scattered about the plate as well...  The way the matrix split off the top of this piece has left some beautiful contours that are not fully appreciated through the photos.  This would make a beautiful decorator piece or a beautiful specimen for the Eurypterid Collector as well...

Name:  Pterygotus mcrophthalmus
Geologic Age:  Silurian (400 Million Years Old)
Stratigraphic detail:  Fiddlers Green
Location:  Herkimer County, New York
Comments:    This is a RARE FIND!!  In addition to the partial remipes that is spread throughout the plate there is a big coxa from a THE PREDATOR of the Silurian... the Pterygotus!!  With sharp shark-like teeth these predators would eat anything it wanted to, including other smaller eurypterids.  It's quite possible that the scattered remains present on this plate are here as a direct result of being attacked and torn apart by this predator!  Complete specimens of Pterygotus are EXTREMELY RARE and almost unheard of!!  If you are looking to add a specimen to your collection.. this is an excellent opportunity that shouldn't be missed!!
