Apachesaurus was a predatary amphibian that lived during the Late Triassic period at a time when these animals were being gradually replaced by the reptiles. Looking like a large salamander, it had a broad slab-like head. It used its cavernous mouth to sieve water for small fish using a bank of fine teeth to trap them. Like all amphibians, it has lungs instead of gills and probably detected vibrations in the water for hunting. Like the lung fish, it could cope with seasonal water shortages by becoming dormant in the mud of dry rivers.
