Name: Asteroceras obtusum
Geologic Age: Jurassic
Stratigraphic detail: Lower Lias Formation
Location: Lyme Regis, Dorset England
Comments: The shell of the ammonite is both one of the most immediately recognizable objects in the fossil record, and one of the most harmonious forms to be found anywhere on the planet. The fascinating coil of this shell shades from a lovely chocolate brown coloring in the areas of the larger living chambers, to a translucent creamy coloring in the smaller central chambers that provided the animal with buoyancy. The delicate fern-like suture lines of growth pattern are clearly visible, and there is a lovely three-dimensionality to the gently ribbed shell. The ammonite measures 4 1/2 inches wide and its strong coloring stands in excellent aesthetic contrast to gray matrix, 11 inches high.

Comments: This is a gorgeous display specimen!!  The block of matrix was prepped down to and around the ammonite.  The ammonite ha not been placed into the matrix.. It is 100% natural to the matrix and has not been removed.  The display is bowl shaped, with the ammonites prepped 3-D within the bowl.. very, very nice!!  The block of the matrix measures approx. 12
1/2" - 13" wide and the ammonite measures approx. 3 15/16" wide.
