Name: Protocanites lyoniGeologic Age: Mississippian
Stratigraphic detail: Rockford Limestone FormationLocation: Rockford, Indiana
Comments: Offered here is, by far, the rarest Indiana ammonite from the collection of Maggie Kahrs. This ammonite, along with the Muensteroceras parallelum, was found approximately 40 years ago in a small river outcrop in Indiana that was quickly collected out. Approximately 75 ammonites were collected in that outcrop and the majority of them were in Maggie's collection. She donated a number of the ammonites to local museums and the best ones she kept in her personal collection. Her estate auction was last year and indiana9fossils were able to purchase her best specimens. This specimen is one of those. It measures 2 1/2" wide and shows outstanding growth sutures. This specimen is far rarer than the Muensteroceras parallelum that just sold. This is the only one of this genus I was able to acquire at the auction. These are not the most aesthetic specimens offered for sale, but they are certainly some of the rarest.Protocanites Ammonite 1 $275.00
